On the occasion of MWC 2023, Xiaomi announced the launch in Europe of its Watch S1 Pro, a connected watch that runs MIUI Watch OS, an interface based on Android. It doesn’t actually work with Wear OS 3, Google’s operating system dedicated to connected watches and bracelets. This deprives Xiaomi models of various functions and applications that require this operating system. According to our colleagues 9to5GoogleIt would soon be ancient history: the Chinese manufacturer would be working on a watch under Wear OS 3.

The source of the English medium would be close to the Xiaomi development teams. An upcoming Xiaomi Watch model could adopt Google Play Services and thus the Wear OS branding. It would be managed through the Mi Fitness (Xiaomi Wear) application, which is already used for existing references. No specific release date has been indicated on the information site, except that this future watch will be released later this year.

The main advantage of a watch under Wear OS 3 is the ability to install all compatible applications available in the Play Store. Music streaming services, fitness, etc. Which would also greatly improve the integration of notifications or paying with your watch thanks to Google Wallet for example.

If this could bring many exclusive features to Xiaomi Watch, especially if the brand generalizes Wear OS 3 to all its models, there would also be disadvantages. Manufacturer’s watches are often famous for their autonomy, which can last several days. However, models released or updated to Google’s operating system so far are not recognized by this.

Wear OS 3 continues to leave its mark

Assuming Xiaomi switched to Wear OS 3, the latter would go its way as it does today. In recent months, we’ve seen Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, Google’s Pixel Watch, and more. Upgrade to Wear OS 3.

Other manufacturers have already launched models, such as Fossil, MontBlanc or even Mobvoi. Regarding the latter, in addition, it is expected to become in the coming weeks with its TicWatch Pro 5.
