A redesigned design
After two aesthetically quite similar headphones, for the fifth generation of its Bluetooth headphones, Sony is completely revamping the design. The design is still well executed, but with a more minimalist and clean look. The thinnest and most flexible headband, with a matte “felt” coating for the most beautiful effect. On the other hand, it’s a shame that this design change prevents it from folding.
Even more effective active noise reduction
To continue being one of the best benchmarks in headphones with active noise reduction, the Japanese firm adds eight microphones to the XM5 compared to four in the previous one. The manufacturer goes even further, adding an atmospheric pressure sensor. The latter to detect if the user is on a plane, as well as a technical fabric in the microphones to filter the bursts and prevent them from being transcribed in the speakers.
Voice call quality has also been improved to properly isolate your voice from ambient noise. At the level of the transducers, we went from a diameter of 40 mm to a diameter of 30 mm. Sound reproduction is similar to that of the WH-1000XM4, but the XM5 shows even more precision and offers a “more natural” reproduction, but with less emphasized bass. For the rest, we find the three Bluetooth audio codecs SBC, AAC and LDAC. The headset also features Sony’s DSEE Extreme algorithm as well as multipoint Bluetooth support.
Finally, the headphones can last up to 30 hours with noise reduction on and 40 hours without it. As for recharging, you can gain 3 hours of listening time in just 3 minutes of charging.
