Nothing is a very young high-tech company created in London by Carl Pei, one of the co-founders of OnePlus who, after convincing several large investors, set up his company in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the context, Nothing was successful with its first smartphone, the Phone (1) with a completely peculiar design and excellent performance. This smartphone, as atypical as it is magnificent, is currently 50 euros cheaper in its 256 GB version.

It’s got glyphs over here!

Appearance matters a lot in a smartphone and the first thing that catches your eye in this Nothing Phone (1) are those luminous traces on the back of the device. This is the Glyph, a device that animates based on the ringtones and notification sounds built into the smartphone. It is entirely incidental, but it has the merit of being original. Also, Glyph works when Nothing Phone (1) is muted, which adds convenience.

On the screen side, the Nothing Phone (1) sports a 6.55-inch OLED panel in Full HD+ resolution (2,400 x 1,080 pixels) and with a 120 Hz refresh rate, which is excellent to say the least. On the other hand, the brightness is measured at 656 cd/m² and the colorimetry is at 83% of the DCI-P3 spectrum, we are in the low range. Fortunately, the OLED screen offers us a good contrast ratio. The display is of exemplary quality and the battery doesn’t seem to suffer as the Nothing Phone (1) can easily last a day before being recharged.

Decent performance for the price.

About six months before the announcement of the Phone (1), Nothing announced a partnership with Qualcomm, so we could legitimately expect a processor from the US manufacturer to equip this smartphone. The Nothing Phone (1) features a Snapdragon 778G+ SoC assisted by 8 GB of LPDDR5 RAM. The gaming performance is honorable, knowing that the chip comes from the mid-range and in terms of value for money. However, heating is present, which can wear out components in the long run.

The photographic component also defends itself well. The Phone (1) has two rear sensors: a 50 Mpx (f/1.88) wide-angle main sensor with optical and electronic image stabilization, and a 50 Mpx (f/2, 2) ultra-wide angle with electronic stabilization only. . At the front you can count on a 16 Mpx (f/2.45) front sensor. The Glyph can bring real added value here. Put into use, it offers alternative lighting to flash for your night photos.
