Sony has released an update to its WF-1000XM4s. The high-end headphones from the Japanese manufacturer can now take advantage of multipoint Bluetooth and connect simultaneously to a smartphone and a laptop.

Good things come to those who wait. Last October, Sony announced an upcoming update for two pairs of its wireless earbuds, the Sony LinkBuds S and the Sony WF-1000XM4, which enable multipoint Bluetooth connection of these earbuds.

If the manufacturer implemented this feature fairly quickly for its LinkBuds S, with an update during the month of December, the one for the WF-1000XM4 took a little longer than expected to land. If the deployment was scheduled for “ this winter“, without further details, it finally started as reported by the siteandroid police.

Nearly two years after its release, the Sony WF-1000XM4 can now be upgraded to simultaneously connect to two Bluetooth audio sources, say a smartphone and a computer. The sound will automatically switch between the two sources based on which device played sound most recently. This is a particularly practical function, for example, to listen to music on your computer, but still be able to take a call received on your smartphone. To take advantage of this, users will need to update their headphones’ firmware to version 2.0.0 via the Sony Headphones Connect app.

A still rare feature in wireless headphones

If multipoint Bluetooth support is now a well-integrated feature in wireless headphones, it’s still pretty rare in true wireless headphones. In addition to Sony with its two pairs of headphones, Jabra has offered this feature for several generations of headphones. This is also the case with Google with its Pixel Buds Pro, Huawei with its FreeBuds Pro 2 or Xiaomi with its Redmi Buds 4 Pro. However, the market references, whether they are AirPods Pro 2 or Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II, do not take advantage of this characteristic.

The deployment of multipoint Bluetooth on the WF-1000XM4 has already started. Also remember that Sony could soon launch its new generation of high-end wireless headphones, the WF-1000XM5. If the manufacturer focused last year on its range of headphones, with the launch of the WH-1000XM5, two years had passed between the launches of the WF-1000XM3, in 2019, and the WF-1000XM4, in 2021. The year 2023 should therefore be the year of Sony’s new high-end wireless headphones again.
