At MWC 2023, Huawei showcased a host of new products, including its incredible watch and headset concept, the Huawei Watch Buds.
There are the wacky concepts that come out of an engineer’s head that you would never see yourself using, and then there are the wacky concepts that you think “why hasn’t anyone thought of this before?” At MWC 2023 in Barcelona, Huawei showed us this second category with its new connected watch, the Huawei Watch Buds. We were able to take it in hand.
If you missed the concept, it can be summed up quite easily: a watch with headphones inside. Thus, the watch acts as a charging case and houses tiny buttons that are barely the size of earplugs. The kind of item we really fear losing or dropping under a Norman wardrobe.
Three days of battery life and good magnets.
To access the buttons, we used a simple central button located below the dial and which opens the lid, a bit like a classic headphone box. The headphones are firmly anchored thanks to very effective magnets.

Advertised with three days of autonomy (if you don’t use the buttons at all), the watch is still relatively chunky, even if we stick to portable proportions. The screen also seems to have suffered some compromises to get the result here. We have a beautiful Oled screen, but relatively bulged on the sides with a coating reminiscent of very shiny plastic, causing many reflections.
The other small concession that we point out is of a software nature. To connect to buds with your smartphone, you need to go through the watch, which itself requires Huawei Health to be installed. We would have liked a slightly simpler connection, like for traditional buds.
