At CES 2023, MediaTek announced a veritable invasion of its chips in Philips Oled TVs. In fact, all of the manufacturer’s 2023 models will be equipped with Pentonic chips. To a lesser extent, Sony will also announce models equipped with MediaTek Pentonic SoC later this year.

Pentonic 2000, 1000 and 700. These are the three chip references that MediaTek should deploy in 2023 in an entire line of Philips and Sony televisions. Designed in collaboration with display calibration specialist American Portrait Display, some of these chips will be prominently integrated into all OLED TVs launched by Philips in 2023, and will be installed aboard at least some of Sony’s TVs expected to launch. end of this year. For the foreseeable future, however, the Japanese manufacturer is keeping its 2023 TVs under wraps, still preventing us from knowing which models will be affected.

As for Philips, we know that the brand will mainly use the Pentonic 1000 SoC, best suited for 4K models with four HDMI 2.1 ports (the Pentonic 2000s are intended for 8K models). At this stage, however, it is not known if Philips will also install MediaTek chips in its vintage LCD references from 2023 or only in its Oled TVs, FlatPanelsHD underlines.

MediaTek and Calman make their way to Philips and Sony

« All Philips Oled TV series launched in 2023 will achieve an exceptional level of high-quality picture performance thanks to Calman Ready and MediaTek Pentonic 1000. Phillips commented. Sony, for its part, is necessarily a bit more evasive, insisting instead on the prospects offered by its partnership with the MediaTek / Portrait Display tandem in terms of calibration.

« Designing televisions that faithfully convey the creator’s intent is our passion. In addition to Sony’s built-in image processing algorithms, our strategic collaboration with Portrait Displays and MediaTek allows us to take the viewing experience of our Smart TVs to the next level. With precise color calibration, customers can enjoy movies and TV shows exactly as they were meant to be seen. Sony says.

It should be noted, however, that the use of MediaTek chips is nothing new for Sony and Philips, as the two brands already use them for some of their current models under Android TV and Google TV.

As for the partnership between MediaTek and Portrait Display, it will mainly benefit manufacturers, calibration specialists and users with the right equipment. In fact, they will be able to connect directly to the Calman software to perform automatic calibrations for SDR and HDR content. A good thing for Sony and Philips TVs, of course, but one that should especially benefit more advanced users.
