Since the iPhone X, Apple smartphones no longer have the historic central “Home” button. This was used, for example, to launch Siri and take screenshots. With the removal of this button, we had to revise how to activate these features. The way you turn off the iPhone has been particularly affected by these changes, as a long press on the power button now launches Siri.

Imagine your iPhone having to restart due to a bug you can’t fix. You hold down the lock button to turn it off like on any smartphone and there you find yourself facing Siri. Fortunately, frandroid is there to help you and explain how to turn off your smartphone.

How to turn off an iPhone: the procedure

To turn off iPhones with Face ID (iPhone X, XS, XR, 11, 11 Pro, 12, 12 Pro, 13, 13 Pro, 14 and 14 Pro) you must press and hold the side button and one of the volume keys simultaneously. iPhone will ask you to turn off your phone or make an emergency call.

Be careful to keep the two buttons well, because by pressing only the side button and clicking one of the volume buttons, a screenshot is triggered.

If not, it is also possible to disable it from the settings:

  • Walk into Settings ;
  • Walk into General ;
  • Click on to extinguish.

This technique is less obvious than the long press on the power button that we have long been used to on smartphones. The Cupertino company is not interested in turning off your smartphone frequently. The iPhone is no longer a simple phone, but a device to do everything to accompany us in life.

How to restart your iPhone?

If your iPhone is completely bricked due to a bug, then the manipulations we have presented will not work. Here is another method to force restart an iPhone no matter its state.

  • press quickly volume up button ;
  • Then quickly press on the volume down button ;
  • So hold on the lock button pressed for a few seconds;
  • You can release when the Apple logo appears.

Care must be taken to work through the steps in order without holding down the volume keys to succeed in the forced reboot.

A method that has become complex

These manipulations to turn off or restart the iPhone have become more complex and less instinctive. However, do we turn off our smartphone so often these days? In our case, in the newsroom, it is something increasingly scarce. If you don’t want your phone to bother you, turn off notifications. You can also switch it to airplane mode. This allows us not to be disturbed and to avoid the connection to the mobile network, the functionality that consumes the most energy of a smartphone put to sleep. Locking a smartphone with airplane mode consumes almost nothing.

Smartphones have become such important objects in our daily lives that even activating airplane mode can cause a little sense of anxiety, we risk missing an important call or message, a conversation with excited friends, or even important information.

However, turning off your smartphone can be really useful for different reasons. If it starts to slow down, leaving it off for a few minutes can, for example, stop the various tasks that were running and consuming a lot of battery. We can also turn it off during a meeting or at any other time when it should not distract us.
