The first phone of the year equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has passed through our hands. What to get a good idea of what awaits us in terms of power in the flagships of 2023.
Do you know IQOO (pronounced as IQ, intelligence quotient in English)? Is it a sub-brand of the Vivo group founded in 2019 with a strong gaming identity whose smartphones are currently only released in China?
So why tell our French readers? Well, imagine one of their latest flagships, the IQOO 11, is already equipped with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. The Vivo France team has a copy and let us spend an afternoon with the plane. Beyond its LTPO 4 screen or its V2 chip dedicated to photography, the phone above all allows us to have a good idea of the chip that you will find in all high-end phones from 2023 as well as in the Samsung Galaxy S23.
Admittedly, we had already been able to launch benchmarks on a phone with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, but it was a reference design, that is, a phone assembled by Qualcomm to serve as a reference and therefore optimized for small onions. The IQOO 11 for its part is a commercial product already sold. Therefore, we can consider that its performance is a reliable indicator of what we can expect from this chip in real conditions.
Results: the new Snapdragon surpasses the iPhone 14 Pro
These are the results we got on AnTuTu 9 and the 3D Mark Wild Life Extreme benchmark. We chose to compare three phones with three different high-end chips. The Asus Zenfone 9 with its Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, the Samsung Galaxy S22 with an Exynos 2200, and the iPhone 14 Pro equipped with the A16 Bionic.
Antute 9 | Rate CPU | GPU Score | Wild Life Extreme 3D Mark | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Iqoo 11 (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2) | 1275995 | 261069 | 580811 | 3322 / 19.9FPS |
iPhone 14 Pro | 1100078 | 250276 | 398452 | 3777 / 22.60FPS |
Asus Zenfone 9 | 935522 | 265693 | 468956 | 2803 / 16.80FPS |
Galaxy S22 | 830516 | 201509 | 351796 | 1800 / 10.80FPS |
First remark, the new chip is in the lead everywhere. We see that it is especially the GPU part where it stands out, since it adds almost 200,000 points more than the iPhone 14 Pro and more than 110,000 more than the Asus in the GPU part of AnTuTu 9. Quite logically we find this advantage over Wild Life. , which measures graphics performance, coming in at just over 2 FPS higher (i.e. a 10% increase) than the iPhone 14 Pro and 6 FPS higher than the Asus Zenfone 9, an increase close to 25%.
On the other hand, we can also denote the fact that the power of the CPU has not evolved much. In fact, the IQOO 11 is even behind these two main competitors, by a few points, but still behind.
good for samsung
If you’re looking to stock up on Samsung in 2023, there’s a lot to be excited about. In fact, the Galaxy S23 is expected to switch to a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 powered configuration. There, the gap to the Exynos 2200 is unparalleled. Wild Life score is increased by 120%, while AnTuTu 9 overall score is increased by almost 53%. Keep in mind, however, that it’s not impossible that every Galaxy S23 won’t have the same power. In fact, Samsung is expected to equip its basic S23 with simple sheets of graphite, while the S23 Plus is expected to have a heat pipe system and the S23 Ultra could feature the best of the three systems, a vapor chamber. .
As for cooling, let’s add in passing that the IQOO 11 was pretty impressive on this point. After two hours of chaining reference points and games of genshin impact, remained resolutely cold. So, of course, this may be a sign of a chip that handles heating better, but let’s temper our enthusiasm.
insurance genshin impactPlease know that the game runs smoothly at maximum settings and a stable 60 FPS. The fluidity and comfort are simply on the same level as what we know from the iPhone 14 Pro. A real treat. Also, the phone heats up less than Apple’s.
The IQOO 11 incorporates a quite advanced cooling system with a 4000mm² vapor chamber and a frame that is supposed to reduce the temperature inside the device by 2°C. Let’s remember that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 had been affected by significant heating problems at the beginning of its commercialization. This first grasp reassures us about the future of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The first tests will allow us to get to the bottom of it.
