At MWC 2023, we find ourselves with a smartphone that isn’t shy, shamelessly copying both the Nothing(1) phone and the iPhone 14 Pro for a fun mix.

There are two types of technological products: those that innovate and those that copy. We will calmly place the Unihertz Luna -exhibited at MWC 2023- in the second category. In fact, it’s a not-so-subtle mix between the Nothing phone (1) and the iPhone 14 Pro.

Let’s be honest, you already have most of what you need to know about this smartphone. Let’s go a little more in detail to give you some impressions of the device.

ugly LEDs

Obviously, the first thing that catches your eye is the shamelessly copied part of the phone (1): the RGB LED lights on the back. This was the most striking aesthetic element of Nothing’s first smartphone launched in 2022.

And on the Unihertz Luna there are also options to customize the taillights to come alive to the beat of the music or have the animation differ based on the notification received. In short, the inspiration for Nothing phone (1) exudes from every pore.

The taillights didn’t appear to be of the highest quality either. It’s pretty easy to distinguish each LED individually as soon as you take a closer look. In comparison, in the Nothing device, they are much thinner and better arranged for a more homogeneous diffusion.

A thicker iPhone

But what about the inspiration of the iPhone 14 Pro? This one is no less obvious. It is enough to look at the design of the photo module or the flat edges to guess that Apple is still a brand that many love to imitate.

Beyond that, the Unihertz Luna isn’t the most pleasant smartphone in the hand. Quite heavy, it is especially very thick to house a 5000 mAh battery. The product is powered by a MediaTek SoC, the Helio G99 associated with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage.

It has a 108MP main photosensor. It also has a 3.5 mm jack and a highly refined interface natively based on Android 12.

A cheap copy and a tribute.

The Unihertz Luna will launch «globallyas of March 2023. Without being able to reveal the official price of the product, the brand’s spokesperson told us that this price would remain below US$300.

It remains to be seen if it can see the light in France and for what amount in euros. Meanwhile, some will probably laugh at this smartphone that is not ashamed to copy. On the other hand, if Apple is used to having its iPhones cloned by sometimes obscure manufacturers, this is not the case with the young Nothing brand.

For her, it’s almost a moving tribute since it only took one model to give the scoundrel copyists ideas. Nothing boss Carl Pei has some fun on Twitter.

An intelligent communication to try to persuade consumers that their first smartphone is already iconic.
