Samsung presents the Samsung Galaxy A54, its mid-range smartphone that is gradually approaching the premium segment with the addition of a glass back, a new 50-megapixel sensor that is better (on paper) in night mode, but also, and above all, endowed with a price that takes 40 euros by the way.

Undoubtedly, 2022 will remain one of the best years for smartphones under 500 euros, even raising the question of the interest of spending more on a smartphone. One of the main players in this observation is called the Galaxy A53, a smartphone that is admittedly underpowered, but very balanced and well-equipped for its price range. Here is its successor, the Galaxy A54.
First observation: the price reminds us that inflation has been there, since it starts at 499 euros, compared to 459 euros the previous year.
Glass back, higher brightness and new photosensor
To justify this increase, Samsung has taken great care to offer a certain improvement over its A53. It starts with a glass back for a little premium touch. The photo modules now do without a photo block and are integrated directly into the back of the phone, which also allows a bit of clarity to be gained, even if the entire A range now adopts this identity.
Another really differentiating design element: the size of the phone. We went from a 6.5-inch panel to a 6.4-inch, all AMOLED, 120Hz, and 1000 nits of brightness (up from 800 last year). Therefore, the size of the A54 is a little closer to a Galaxy S23 and slightly different from the S23 Plus.

Two other elements allow us to justify the move to the upper market: the move to 8 GB of RAM in the entire range and the arrival of a new 50-megapixel sensor, which supposedly will allow better quality night photos. Samsung also mentions Nightography, a marketing term reserved until now for the Galaxy S.
The eSIM is invited to the mid-range
We will not mention the arrival of a new Exynos 1380 SoC, since normally the very beginning of technological progress is to be able to regularly offer more powerful devices at the same price. Especially since Samsung doesn’t communicate about performance gains, we’ll have to judge for ourselves during our test.

For the rest, the phone packs a 12-megapixel ultra-wide angle, a 5-megapixel macro, and a 32-megapixel selfie. You can expand its storage with a micro SD card of up to 1 TB, it has a 5000 mAh battery charged at 25 W. It highlights the presence of Wi-Fi 6 and compatibility with eSIM. The latter is usually reserved for the high-end, so it is also a good point to take.
Samsung Galaxy A54 price and availability
