The new Buick Electra E5 finally reveals photos of its cabin, equipped with a huge 30-inch curved 6K screen compatible with 5G connectivity. If it is destined for China, the electric SUV could well consider an arrival in Europe after its launch next year.
Like many American manufacturers, Buick is not present in Europe. However, the firm continues to have a strong link with the Old Continent, since it actually markets rebaded versions of models sold here by Opel, such as the Regal, which is none other than a reworked Insignia. We also think of the Encore, an SUV with the benefits of the Mokka. But the manufacturer, of course, wants to diversify its range. offering new models, especially electric.
A technological interior
This is how last December, the American manufacturer lifted the veil on its Electra E5, a 100% electric SUV initially intended for the Chinese market. Mais celui-ci ne sort pas de nulle part, puisqu’il avait été prefiguré par un concept-car adoptante le même nom, presenté au mois d’Octobre 2020. of the joint venture Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center created by Buick with the Chinese giant SAIC Motor (to whom we owe the excellent MG4).
A few months after showing off its exterior design, the Detroit, Michigan-based company is now revealing its driving position in a press release. The latter obviously wants to be very technological, since it notably incorporates a huge 30-inch 6K curved digital panel called EYEMAX. Like the Mercedes Hyperscreen or the screens on the BMW i4 and other Wuling Bingo, this one actually integrates a digital phone and a touch screen.
Everything is associated with a great 12.6-inch front screen in color, which projects all the important data for driving, such as speed or navigation, onto the windshield. The electric SUV is equipped with the latest version of the brand’s infotainment system, the Buick eConnectthat offers access to many applications, without the manufacturer giving more details.
Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, it supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and comes with 5G connectivity. The vehicle can also benefit from remote OTA updates, like on a Hyundai, Volvo or Tesla. Thus, the Electra E5 can be improved without the driver having to go to a dealer.
A good space on board.
In addition to the infotainment system, Buick also provides details about the driving position of its SUV as a whole. It is equipped in particular withambient lighting that offers no less than 121 colors, while the car comes standard with the Buick QuietTuning sound system provided by Bose. The air purification device is also part of the standard equipment of this Electra E5.
Halfway between the Tesla Model Y and the Model X and then rivaling the new Nio EC7, this newcomer has a wheelbase of 2.95 meters, as well asa trunk of 1,658 liters when the seat is folded down. As announced in a previous press release, the SUV is 4.89 meters long overall.
First model based on the American Ultium platform developed by General Motors, distinguished by a low production cost, this new Buick Electra E5 has not yet revealed its technical characteristics. The SUV, the technical cousin of the Cadillac Celestiq scheduled for 2024, should then ship batteries developed by LG Chem with a low cobalt content. More and more manufacturers are moving away from this material, such as Stellantis, which will equip its cars with LFP packs.
The SUV could then reach 640 kilometers of autonomy and display a charging power of up to 350 kW. This platform is also compatible with 400 and 800 volt architectures, such as the Porsche Taycan. Launched in China this year, the Buick Electra E5 should be on sale in the United States in 2024. A technical cousin to the GMC Hummer EV and Sierra EV, it could very well make its way to Europe, while General Motors plans to make its big move there. comment.
