Managing File Explorer tabs will be more enjoyable. With the latest version of Windows 11, it is now possible to create a new window very easily from a tab. A very relevant small modification, inspired by macOS Finder.
Introduced at the beginning of February, the new version of Windows 11 (25290) brings some interesting changes to the interface of Microsoft’s operating system. Beyond a small addition to the start menu (new badges on the profile icon to notify the user when intervention is required) and various bug fixes, this preview also and above all allows you to implement better user management. tabs for File Explorer.
This long-awaited change should improve the experience, while reducing the interface and performance issues found so far with the latest versions of File Explorer. The idea is also to make the use of tabs more fun and intuitive thanks to a new function.
File Explorer becomes more flexible
This new feature is none other than the ability to create a new window from a tab that is moved outside of its initial window. A fairly basic manipulation (a “click/drop” is enough), and it has been around for a long time in macOS, but was not yet available in Windows in this way. With the latest version of Windows 11, Microsoft is also making it easy to move a tab within File Explorer, thereby giving you more flexibility.
Build 25290 includes a new hidden feature that allows you to drag a File Explorer tab out of a window to open it in its own new window.

Note, however, that Microsoft hasn’t fully finalized this new feature yet, so it’s hidden. Therefore, it must be activated by running the Windows Terminal application. If you have already installed Windows 11 build 25290 on your PC and you are not afraid of possible errors, here is the procedure to follow:
- Back up your important data as needed
- First, download ViveTool from GitHub and unzip the files to an easy-to-find folder.
- Press Win + X and select Terminal (in Admin mode).
- Switch Windows Terminal to the Command Prompt profile using the Ctrl + Shift + 2 shortcut or by clicking the little down arrow at the top of the window.
- Navigate to the folder containing the ViveTool files with the “CD” command. For example, if you placed ViveTool in “C:\Vive”, type “CD C:\Vive”.
- Type “vivetool /enable /id:39661369” and press Enter.
- Restart your computer.
